[Day 1 - MM] At the Border [Event]

Event Type: Main Story
Participants: All (Unless already in the village and not Crab)
Timeslots: Mid Morning

Description: The Border Crossing checkpoint is busy this morning and the Crab have brought in extra help to handle the increased traffic inbound for the wedding. Show your papers and answer a few questions and go on your way, welcome and enjoy your stay.

Rules: Magic is not allowed.

Crab

If the player is a Crab and not visiting, then they can check the papers of the guests. This requires making sure everything is in order, addressing any issues, and then making sure a correct tally is kept with the Border Official.

Travel Papers Please: Make a TN 10 Etiquette + Awareness (Bureaucracy) check, a player can make a raise on this roll. Each Raise grants +2 bonus on the roll in the next step of the event; but if they fail, with raises, they automatically fail the next step but can do the third step. Succeeding at the roll means the player has checked the papers properly.

Is it in Order?: Make a TN 12 Lore Law + Intelligence check to make sure you got everything correct, failing this roll means you have to increase the TN of the next step by 5. Raises can be made on this check, every two raises made increases the possible Glory reward by .1 for being exceptional at their job.

Keep a proper Tally: Make a TN 20 Sincerity (Honesty) + Awareness check to present your numbers to the Border Official and consider your task complete. Raises have no effect on this roll other than you present nicely.

Guests

Guests must present their papers, state their intentions and navigate any possible issues with their paperwork. Ronin and Lion have all TNs increased by +2 for this event, for security reasons.

It’s an Old Picture: Make a TN 15 Etiquette (Bureaucracy) + Awareness or Lore Law + Intelligence check to present papers and make sure everything is in order. Raises can be made here that grant a +2 bonus on the next check for every two raises made. Failure here increases the TN of the next step by 5, failing with raises increases that TN by 5 times the amount of raises wagered.

I solemnly swear..: Make a TN 15 Sincerity (Honesty) + Awareness, Sincerity (Deceit) + Awareness, or Temptation + Awareness check to provide testimony of your reason for being here. Using a Low skill here is considered a Minor Breach of Etiquette; raises can be made here and each successful raise increases the Honor reward by .1 per every two raises called.

Rewards/Outcome: If a Crab player completes two of the 3 steps they get .1 Glory and if a Guest completes at least one of the steps they get .1 Honor. If a guest does not pass any roll they will be marked as a potential troublemaker by the Crab, gain .2 Infamy. If a Crab sentry fails all of their rolls they lose .2 Glory for being terrible at their job. Even if they fail they are allowed entry after everything is settled.

Remember it takes a time slot to get to the village from here so feel free to make threads in the Hinterlands for the next time time slot, stick to the road and you will be safe.

[Kitsuki Naida]

Naida had no troubles passing the borders; Being a wanderer of sorts, she was used to providing her papers. Even used to the odd looks one gave the paperwork of a Dragon in these times, especially a Dragon with such non-specific papers. But it all checked out and she went on her way without too much fuss for good or ill.

[Yue]

Crossing borders were often a pain for Yue when she was used to going through the backwoods and rock hills. If she had a few days, she could wait for the weather to get lousy and the right patrols to pass. However, there was an event here supposedly and she couldn't afford to wait for an opportunity to slip past, especially when there was work waiting on the other side. Most importantly, she didn't want to feel what it felt like getting hit by a tetsubo.

She awkwardly strolled up to the guards after they finished chatting with a visiting Clan samurai. When the guards glanced at her, they were suddenly devoid of goodwill and chattiness. There were no friends worth making here and she didn't have any freebies to give either. She was curtly asked for her purpose here and she replied in kind, simple and straight to the point. It wasn't her intention to cast much of a footprint with her presence here, just another face to be forgotten.

"Do you have work here?" she would be asked.
"No," she answered.
"Are you looking for work?" was the follow-up question.
"Yes," she answered.
The guard gave her a look up and down to make sure she wasn't here to cause trouble. They wouldn't take a ronin who wasn't willing to be productive. The guard would then give a wave to a familiar-looking Crane standing a few places behind her, motioning Yue through as he had better things to do.

[Amika]

Amika was not one that would lie in front of a border guard. She had nothing to hide and did not come here to cause any trouble for the Crab clan. As it was her turn for presenting her papers to the burly crab samurai she bowed gracefully as shown them without much problem.

The border guard looked up at the official documents once or twice and then took a look at Amika herself, probably to see and corroborate that she was the one indeed described inside the papers.

The border guard asked a few questions to her, as the reason to be travelling into the Crab lands, period of stay, and those types of things. Amika replied with absolute sincerity each one of the questions. Her voice, sweet but firm, convinced the burly samurai that indeed she was not coming here to cause any trouble. How much trouble could a painter do in these lands in any case?

She also added and commented that it would be interesting to immortalize the beauty of the Crab lands with her art and of the proud duty that the honorable Crab clan continues to fulfill without second thoughts. Maybe that comment made the border guard and some of his companions that where close by enough to hear fill their chests with pride. They gave a few positive nods to the ronin painter and returned her papers and let her pass into the Crab lands.

"Papers, Please."

Tanaka produced her papers: identification papers, orders from her daimyo, Exit permits from the Crane, Entry permits from the Crab, documents showing her as a valid representative of the Dragon. All of it stamped in triplicate then sent to an office to verify the stamps and stamped again in triplicate to verify the stamps previous verified were in fact valid.



"Glory to the Empire." Tanaka said as she was handed back her documentation.

"Cause no trouble." Replied the sentry

His papers were much simpler, and functionally amounted to, "I'm with Kitsuki Tanaka." Despite the fact that the proper documents amounted to little more than a one line answer to a request, it still came from his daimyo and had the proper chops. While he looked a little shifty, he was still allowed through with the statement, "Cause no trouble."

The guard peered at the old Crane woman’s papers carefully. “You say you walked here from Kyuden Doji?” he asked dubiously. He had seen the woman hobble up to the checkpoint and had serious doubts that the decrepit Crane could even make it to town from here by herself.

“Yes, that’s right,” Soon-ja said in her thin voice, smiling. “I've come a long way, but it’s an important wedding and I didn’t want to miss it.”

The guard eyed the woman skeptically. That’s just what a spy would say, he thought. The Crab imagined the decrepit crone suddenly producing a hidden sword and launching some sort of flying ninja attack. But the old woman didn’t do any ninja tricks (at least, none that he saw) and her papers checked out.

“It all looks in order, Doji-sama,” the guard finally conceded, waving her through. Soon-ja smiled, nodded, and began to hobble slowly towards town.

Yuma opened his bag, took out proof of identity, permit, letter of introduction, all impeccably folded and tied together and politely handed the whole package over to the guard.

They skimmed through it and barked a few questions, more for show than because there was any actual issue:

"Why are you visiting the Crab lands?"
"To assist to Daidoji Yushoko-sama's wedding."
"Where will you be staying?"
"Blue Bird House."
"How long will you be staying?"
"Only for the duration of the wedding."
"Do you plan to commit a crime while on Crab ground?"
"No."
"Fine. Pass."

Himeko, pipe in hand, offered her papers willingly to the guards. Her manner was perfect, and she was extremely cooperative throughout. Her intentions were clear; to see a lovely union as an honoured guest of the prestigious Crab clan.

Yep, that's exactly what the Crab guards were left with, entirely convinced by the virtue of this wonderfully polite and kind Scorpion samurai.

[Kakita Yuuwaku]

Yuuwaku waits comfortably in the queue to enter Crab lands, papers at the ready. While she waits, rather than standing stock-still as many others do, she stretches her limbs--not much, to be sure, given the line, but enough to keep blood flowing and joints limber. And she almost dances to the sentry when she is called forward, presenting her papers with a bow and a smile.

Unfortunately, the sentry inspecting them seems a dour sort, perhaps having had the night watch and being kept on to handle the excess traffic. She remains gruff and generally unpleasant, and Yuuwaku feels her smile grow strained and forced as the sentry mutters something about useless fluff before waving her in along her way.

Konohamaru opened his bag, took out proof of identity, permit, magistrate's seal, letter of introduction, all impeccably folded and tied together and politely handed the whole package over to the guard.
Their plan was to skim through it and bark a few questions, more for show than because there was any actual issue:

"Why are you visiting the Crab lands?"
"To assist to Daidoji Yushoko-sama's wedding."
"Where will you be-?"
He was interrupted by his friend, who put a hand on his shoulder and pulled him aside.
"Hold on. I think I recognise that name."
"You do?"
"I do - you remember what my cousin said about the dread magistrate - you know, the abbot killer? The puppy kicker?"
"Are you saying that Crane bastard is Kakita Ji?!"

"Yes."

Both men jumped at the interruption, or perhaps the sudden appearance of the mask of Ji upon Konohamaru's face. The senior guard was the first to recollect himself in the face of the demon.

"What the hell is the monster magistrate himself doing in a small village like this? Isn't there a puppy you need to torture somewhere?"
"And what the hell did you do to my little brother, you little bastard?!" jumped in the second, regaining a new found sense of purpose - and anger.

No movement, and for a second, no answer from the magistrate.

"Be more specific."

"Ohohoho, so the big bad spooky Crane doesn't have time to remember the people he hurts, does he? how does the name Kakita Jo ring in your head, eh?! THAT RINGING ANY FUCKING BELLS?!"
That last part could be heard further back in the queue, as a sign of trouble up ahead.

"Kakita Jo. Fourteen bushido-bound reports of inappropriate behaviour towards lower classes, three proven counts of attempted blackmail, nineteen public intoxication caused misdemeanours. Responsible for the death of three seperate eta yoriki."

"W-what? I knew about the drinking, but he said you only caught him on the dri-"

"I didn't."

Junior was given a small moment for the news to take hold before Ji (or Konohamaru, depending on who you asked) continued.

"Kakita Jo was a thug with a fondness of exploiting his position for petty coin. He testified to enjoying bleeding money from 'the soft little birdies'. So I-"

"HEEEEYYYY, heyheyheyhey! Your paperwork is in order, so why don't you -"
Unfortunately, the senior guard's peacekeeping was interrupted by the Junior's familial, red-faced fury.
"Nononono. What. Did you do. To my brother. WHERE IS HE?!"

Ji complied.

"I bled him for every koku he bled from others. When it was done, he retired to a Monastery near Samui Kaze no Toshi. If he wrote to you, mail should be arriving within a couple of days."

Silence. Birds composed their soliloquies, bees migrated to the next flowerbed, and somewhere a small puppy whined.

After an agonising minute, the senior guard finished checking the magistrate's papers.

"Kakita-Bugyo, your paperwork is all in order. Should I inform the castle of another guest?"
"I will stay with my fellow Crane at the inn."
"Alright, go on ahead."
Finally, Konohamaru removed the mask, almost as quickly as it had slipped onto his head.
"Thank you."

Silently and without remorse, the dread magistrate moved on.

"Lil Bro... What the hell did you get into?"

Approaching the border checkpoint in his straw hat and cloak, Yamakaze produces his travelling papers from within and hands them over to the guard who examines them carefully, but seems to be satisfied after a moment.

"Purpose of visit?"
"I am here to see my friend, Hida Kitusuchi-sama, and to see the wedding."

The guard blinked a moment. A Dragon friend of Hida-sama and unannounced? Seems fishy...

"Is that going to be a problem?" Yamakaze said, flatly.
"...no, Mirumoto-san. But please report to the castle immediately to verify your presence with our lord, hm?"
"Of course."
"On your way."

And so Yamakaze went along on his business towards the castle.

"Another Scorpion, hmm?" the senior guard held out his hand for papers.

Shitoru supplied them wordlessly.

"Who stamped this? It's worn away, looks like it's passed ten or twelve pairs of hands and was used as a tea coaster..." the two guards eyed Shitoru suspiciously.

"I have come to see a wedding done, are you barring my path?" Shitoru asked politely. Best he not make excuses for the unsteady and ancient hands of his lord's chamberlain. A man can do things on his own if need be.

The guard's stance shifted, he didn't seem worried. Regardless of a messy seal, the papers themselves were written clear, and the Scorpion seemed quite earnest.

"No", the guard replied. "Move along."

"Good advice", Shitoru took the papers back with their approval and hastened after Himeko.

"I don't look like a Doji? Very astute, Hida-san!" The black cloaked figure offered a bow to the perfect level of politeness - neither hair too much nor too little - as it holds out the pale blue invitation, "This one is Bayushi Ushi. Doji Emono, my beloved cousin, ran into grave misfortune - he was waylaid by bandits. Not in Crab lands, never fear, I know you would never allow such a tragedy. Still, his honor demanded his obligations be seen to, including his invitation to this wedding, and as his nearest available kin that honor fell to me."

The Crab sentry squinted at the figure as if trying to discern truth but the mirrored mask only returned a distorted version of her own face. Unable to find fault, or simply uncaring to argue further, she grunted and waved the Scorpion through.

The Hiruma had arrived at the checkpoint early, because sumai wrestlers get up early! Just in time to offer assistance to his traffic-laden brethrens. Being a worldly Crab, he was good at official proceedings of most kinds, and so it was easy for him to jump into the role.
