The Dragon

The long game, that is what scholars would say about the Dragon if they truly knew the depths of their secrets but it is limited to a select few. Togashi has ruled the clan under various guises since the inception of the clan all towards an inscrutable plan that only he truly understood. Even his near immortal son, Togashi Hoshi, did not fully understand the depths of the plan. Togashi could sense that his end was finally nearing and when the Akodo were disbanded after the Coup he knew his time was nigh. His plan to distill his knowledge into his chosen one had failed when it came to the madman named Kokujin and the Empire teetered on destruction.

Togashi had not warned the Hantei and allowed the coup to happen, he waited… he saw the last Hantei get corrupted by his brother, and thus he waited, it was the day of Thunder that he finally acted. By dying. But the Dragon had been spared much of the chaos that had consumed the Empire; they were not unscathed but they were able to survive.

Togashi passed into the beyond, reluctant as he felt there was more to do but as the little teacher had said to him when he was starving himself and showed how selfish he had been… perhaps it was time to let go.

Hitomi took the mantle of Champion after Togashi died by her hand, well his current incarnation and guise. She petitioned Oturi for her own family but the Empress denied her and bade her to take the name Togashi as she was the successor of the Champion mantle. In truth, Oturi did not fully trust the woman and the Obsidian Hand that seemed to affect her far more deeply than she wanted to admit and the two had deep enmity even when they fought side by side.

This would prove pivotal when the Last Hantei returned, it had been the Dragon that found the man and vouched for his lineage to the Lion. By this time Kokujin had joined the Dragon at the behest of Hitomi and this caused a schism within the ranks of the Togashi that kept the Dragon from really dealing with the War of the Last Hantei.

The schism turned into civil war, between Togashi Hitomi and her loyal supporters and a young Mirumoto noble named Mirumoto Hotu, the mountains ran red with Dragon blood and the Agasha deserted Hitomi and joined Hotu and his forces. This culminated in the Siege of Shiro Mirumoto, the rebellion forces did not relent and Hitomi made the decision to end the rebellion with the razing of the castle, peace came to the Dragon lands but the clan was gutted and now her power was absolute.

The remnants of the Mirumoto and Agasha were brought before, their children would be fostered in her home and they would swear fealty or die. Most swore to serve and the Dragon were united but at what cost? The clan has been rebuilding, this Civil War taking place from 1152 to 1158 sidelining them during the War of the Last Hantei.

In 1167 Togashi Hitomi went into seclusion after the aging mad monk failed in his attempt to keep the corruption of the Obsidian Hand from taking her mind and body. In her rage she banished him from the Dragon lands and went into seclusion. This was compounded by the curious case of Togashi Yuu the Topaz Champion of that year who won the title without ever drawing his blade. In the final match he simply sat and meditated and the Lion was confused and then looked into his eyes and said there was Honor and serenity and she could not raise her blade against such a person.

It did not take long for Togashi Yuu to be coined the Dragon Reborn and the young man has a deep well of knowledge, though most Dragon doubt he is the founder reborn. His lineage is a minor one and he has never claimed to be anything more than he is.

A new schism is brewing as Yuu is gathering followers among the Togashi who clash with the darker impulses of the Hitomi aligned followers and with her in seclusion this may be the time for true change.

Maybe the long game is still at work.
