Rokugan in 1178
We live under the guidance of the Oturi dynasty that succeeded the Hantei dynasty, long may they be remembered. Oturi the First has ruled with Wisdom and Honor, and it is expected that her chosen heir will continue the lineage with honor.
Oturi the First was born Akodo Oturi and served the Lion as a commander and a leader in the Imperial Legions, respected by her peers she was stripped of her family name and position when the Emperor was assassinated by the Scorpion in a coup. Stripped of her position she was forced to wander the Empire in shame. Little did she know she would play a pivotal role in saving Rokugan from the clutches of Fu Leng. During this time the Scorpion were exiled and the Emperor took a Scorpion bride, who slowly poisoned him. When Fu Leng’s corruption was revealed the Empire was plunged into war and Oturi gathered an army of ronin, exiled Scorpion, and other like minded samurai to defend the Empire. The clans were at war with most serving the fallen Emperor but the Crab, Crane, and the Mantis, who were bolstered by the forces of Oturi.
A daring raid on the capitol ended the war but it cost thousands of lives and the Capitol burned. In the aftermath after the Fallen hantei was struck down the Crab Champion saw how the Crane and Mantis eyed the Throne and how Oturi turned to tell the forces to stand down as the war was over. He said to the Empress to be that her Duty was not yet done, and that the Empire had further need of her.
Oturi was reluctant but she took the mantle of Empress with the support of the allied forced led by the Crab. The Scorpion were given their lands back and in time there was an uneasy peace. This would last until the fateful War of the Last Hantei.
During the winter of 1151 the Lion presented Hantei Ujio to the court, son of a low born Geisha and the late Emperor, now a man in middle age he asked the court to recognize his claim to the throne. The Lion Champion backed the Last Hantei and the Seppun guards turned on the Empress, all but Seppun Ikeda who aided the Empress in fleeing the court in the dead of winter. They retreated to the Unicorn holdings and denounced the Lion as betrayers. The Lion found common ground with the Crane who were still bitter over Oturi taking the throne and the Mantis. They marched on the Unicorn lands in the Spring and the war was on. The Crab and Scorpion came to the aid of the Unicorn while the Phoenix tried to stay neutral, but their hand was forced when the Last Hantei kidnapped the heir of the Phoenix champion and purged the Elemental Council.
During the six year conflict the Hiruma relciamed their home only to see it razed by the Lion, the Kakita Academy was burned to the ground by the Moto during the Blood March, the Crane have not forgotten this slight. The Phoenix heir was able to escape her captors and this started the Phoenix rebellion and pulled Lion forces from the front. Allowing the Crab and Oturi to trap the Last Hantei, they clashed in a duel at Beiden Pass and the last Hantei was struck down.
It would take decades for the clans to recover, the Academy was rebuilt and the Hiruma rebuilt their home. Many major cities had been sieged and the damage was widespread. Now in 1178, Oturi the First enters her final years, and it is expected that her heir, Oturi Toriyama will ascend and replace her, the eldest and most favored by the court of her children. It is expected that his half brother Toturi will swear fealty to the Otomo and the youngest, Yuahime will join the Ikeda, who replaced the now disbanded Seppun, at the conclusion of the war.
