Basic Dueling

Every Bushi, be it Crab or Crane is expected to know the basics of the duel. To this end all Bushi with Kenjutsu gain Phantom ranks in Iaijutsu equal to their skill minus 2. So at Kenjutsu 3 they have 1 phantom rank of Iaijutsu. Samurai use the higher of their Iaijutsu skill ranks or phantom ranks, they do not combine, and phantom ranks do not provide Mastery.

Every Bushi school trains samurai in the Art of the Duel, in some capacity as it may fall to them to defend their kin's honor. Tsuruchi are weird, but who cares about them.
